Hospitals face NHS health checks.

The Guardian reported yesterday that Hospitals face NHS health checks:

“NHS hit squads will swoop on hospitals where unusually high rates of death, infection and botched operations appear to be harming or killing patients.

As the first healthcare system in the world to operate such a system, investigators from the Healthcare Commission, the NHS watchdog for England, will monitor hospitals using official data and ’soft intelligence’ from complainants and whistleblowers. If high readings are determined they will send in the rapid intervention teams.”

What with the National Patient Safety Agency and the Commons Health Select Committee, things seem to be moving quite fast at the moment. Not too sure what direction yet . . .

I suppose this is a good thing, even though there’s only enough money to employ 4 people.

Usual sort of ’send-in-the-troops’ response though. Wouldn’t it be better to put some real focus on why there is such a problem in the first place?
